As
much as I love my 911 on the track, an early 70's Porsche is somewhat lacking
at a daily driver.
Ergonomics?
that wasn't invented until the 80's or in Porsche 911's, the early 90's.
It
doesn't help that the p-car is setup as a racecar: no seat belts, only 5 point
harness, full cage to crawl over and bang your head into, a very tight racing
shell seat, pretty much non-existant ventilation, a suspension that feels every
expansion joint, brake cooling ducts that never met a driveway or curb they
liked, and the finishing touch: large loud graphics and numbers that scream:
Hey Mr Policeman, I'm a Racecar, I Must be doing something
illegal, Please pull me over.
Because
I didn't wish to extend my commute by visiting every Mayberry police station
in my semi-rural part of Pennsylvania, I bought a daily driver like most of
you.

But
it couldn't be boring, it had to be fun. So I bought a racecar for the street,
a 95 M3.
For
a time, life was good. The car was awesome, sweet torquey motor, wonderful handling
and brakes to die for. There were a few cracks in the happiness. Like that torquey
motor would become a handful when the weather turned crappy, wet, cold, icey,
etc. Not the greatest handler in the snow, like the time I pulled out of my
development and then just slid backwards down to the bottom of the hill. Plus
the topper was driving this awesome German machinery at 25 mphs behind mini-vans
and soccer-mom SUV's on my morning commute. I had more fun wailing my F150 around
those curves, even with the dramamine pills, than the M3 some days. Better
to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.
Time
to sell, and what should replace it? It's got to be FUN; can be driven in crappy
weather; reasonably economical; not so nice I couldn't take
my dog to work in it (there was NEVER a dog inside the M3), and did I say
FUN?
So
enough already! You know what I got, a 2002 WRC blue Subaru WRX. So show me
the car.
Pretty
much as delivered, except for the 17inch Oz Superleggers.
I
bought the car in Nov 01 from my local dealer, Matt Slap in Newark. I shopped
around and ended up getting a good deal on the car. I bought a stripper, the
only installed items were the spoiler and the security system. While the car
was still on the boat in the Pacific, I bought the 17" OZ Superleggers
and put Bridgestone S0-3 tires from Tire Rack.
Work
in progress, more to come ...
