KARTING VI - Winter 2006 - Is Underway!
First Night is Wed Jan 18

What is it?

The Champtionship Karting Series is an informal group of Motorsports enthusiasts, loosely affliated with the Delaware Porsche Club. Several times a year we organize a go-karting racing series to take place at local Karting tracks in the area. Previously we have held the series at the Arnolds Karting Center in Oaks, PA. This fall, a new karting facility, Mid Atlantic Grand Prix, has opened in the Wilmington region. The goal of this series is to provide a fun, challenging, competitive and family friendly activity for friends and others in the Delaware racing community. Excess monies after series expenses are typically donated to a local charity organization.

Comments From a Previous Series :

The series is off to a great start. The top three spots all have 12 points, with overall winner for the night determined by qualifying fast lap. Cris, Gregg and Vince all had 12 points. Everyone seamed to have a great time. It was nice to have some new participants, welcome Doug & KC. And welcome back Colin, Patrick, Chris, Vince and Terri. Regulars Cris, Gregg, Mark, Edward and Jon had some very stiff competition.

A huge THANK YOU to Bob Bloser for all his great work. Recording results for 12 cars and then setting line up for each of the sessions is quite a challenge, and Bob handled it wonderfully. Thanks again Bob. Hope you come back for future rounds. We need you!

THANK YOU goes to all the racers for their efforts to keep the racing clean and not play "bumper cars". Given this was the most karts we've had on the track at one time, things went relatively well. However, there is room for improvement: We must all remember that very rarely do you gain when you are involved in an incident. Keep it clean!

A few things reminders:

1) Cold tires = less grip. These are real slicks that get more grip as they heat up. If you try to go flat out through the turns on the first lap or so, you will likely spin out or hit the tire wall at track out.

2) Three wide thru a turn does not work. Don't try it. Also, if you are behind a pack going thru a turn be ready to hit the brakes as they are surely going to go through slower as a pack. If you hit someone from behind you are at fault. Think - coexistence! Give each other room. Advance by better driving skills and passing strategy, not "bump and run". Also, if you are on the inside in a turn and someone is on the outside, maintain your line on the inside. Don't track out and ram them into the tires, you will both slow down!

3) The qualifying session is not a race. The objective is to get clean fast laps to get your absolute best time. Our scoring system rewards the qualifying session more than most other sessions grid position
in the 1st race and serving as the tie breaker. Remember for this session the objective is to get some clean fast laps!

4) Keep those passes clean. We will discuss in more detail and the next drivers meeting.

Thanks again. Mark

PS - Cris and I welcome any comments on how to improve the series.

Official Rules and Regulations

  1. The Championship Karting Series will consist of 6 events to be held at Mid Atlantic Grand Prix (MAGP) on some night, another night, and finally yet again some more nights to be determined. Please see the schedule.
  2. Each event will consist of three (3) race sessions. Drivers will be split into two (2) race groups, Open and Stout, in which they will remain for the entire series. Driver will contest against racers in their own race group.
  3. There will be no qualifying.
  4. Race 1: Drivers will be gridded according to their finishing position from the previous week's last race session. The field will be then inverted with the last finisher starting first. For example, in a 10 driver field, the 10th finisher will start 1st, the 9th finisher will start 2nd, and so on, until the grid is complete. In the event there is no previous week's session, start order will be determined from a random drawing.
  5. The race start will typically be a standing start two abreast from the set grid. The Karting Admin reserves the right to substitute rolling starts on a random basis. The driver in pole position will have the option of chosing which side of the grid to start from. The second driver will line up next on the grid. The 3rd place driver will line up behind the pole leader. The following drivers will line up in the same fashion until the grid is complete.
  6. The winner of Race 1 will be the person who crosses the finish line first. Second place will be awarded to the racer who has crosses second. Each racer will be placed following the same format.
  7. Race 2: Driver grid position will be determined by their finishing order in Race 1. The field will be then inverted with the last finisher starting first. For example, in a 10 driver field, the 10th finisher will start 1st, the 9th finisher will start 2nd, and so on, until the grid is complete.
  8. Race 3: Driver grid position will be determined by their finishing order in Race 2. The field will be then inverted with the last finisher starting first. For example, in a 10 driver field, the 10th finisher will start 1st, the 9th finisher will start 2nd, and so on, until the grid is complete.
  9. The Karting Admin may at it's discretion, combine any of the two race sessions for a double length "enduro" race session.
  10. Each Race finishing position is assigned a point value, and the drivers' points are totaled for the night. Ties are broken based on fastest lap times.
