Running with NESBA
June 2005

I though car racing with Nomex in 90 degrees was bad, but try doing it wearing 20 lbs of leather. It was frigging HOT!. On the bike for 20 minutes, off for 40, rinse and repeat, from 9am to 5pm. I lost 5 lbs despite drinking lots of water all day long. Two days later I was still thirsty.

There was a WERA bike race on the main track and I caught some of that when I went over for lunch. On the new Shenadoah track, there was a NASA race weekend. When 5pm came I didn't bother to stop by and talk to anybody. All I wanted to do was drive home in my air conditioned truck. Especially since our A/C hasn't worked at home since we came home from the Glen (and still isn't working) I was really beat and tired, even on Sunday. Kinda like the 1st couple of DEs you do, when you use muscles and brains that haven't been exercised before.
I've dissed the Jeff Circuit in the past for driving cars on it, but it turned out to be perfect for bikes, at least for training. Lots of turns, elevation changes and sportbikes rev up so fast you can still get lots of speed before turn in.

Since this is only my 2nd track day with a bike, I'm in the beginner group. Which is fine and dandy with me. I'm closing in on 8K miles on bike in my lifetime as compared to 1million miles in four wheeled (and more) vehicles. So a little more seat time wont hurt my ego before moving up.

My speed came up over the day and by the end they asked me to do a checkout ride to see if I should be promoted to Intermediate. After the checkout ride, the chief instructor said I really had made him work and my speed is as fast as the intermediate guys but I needed to work on a few more things. Such as hanging off more. My bike's leaning angle is way too much as you can see in some of the photos. After the last session I notice that one of my frame sliders was slightly scuffed. Now that's some leaning!

I did get my knees down on both sides so now I'm officially a cool biker dude and have the scuffed sliders to prove it :)

The NESBA guys put on a nice track event, very professional. Highly recommended. Thanks to Dutch and all the control riders.
